AT A GLANCE
Learn more about our recent work in our 2024 Annual Report. Here are some highlights over the years:
The first major investigation of our Beneath the Surface project, Missing in Chicago, published in 2023, won the 2024 Pulitzer Prize for Local Reporting. This investigation highlighted a systemic issue within the Chicago Police Department (CPD) when investigating the cases of missing Black women and girls.
You Didn’t See Nothin combined careful investigative work with powerful narrative storytelling that digs into questions about racial reconciliation and Chicago history, and won the 2024 Pulitzer Prize for Audio Reporting.
Mauled, our Pulitzer prize winning joint investigation into police dogs, led to major changes in Indianapolis and nationally. In Indianapolis, where our reporters first identified a troubling pattern of police dog bites, the local department announced limits to dog bites the same day that we co-published our investigation with IndyStar. In 2021, the first full year after our investigation, the department reported just nine bites, a nearly 90% decrease from the rate before our investigation. Beyond Indianapolis, the Massachusetts legislature passed a police reform bill that included limits on the use of dogs while Washington state passed a law improving local canine policies.
Citizens Police Data Project (CPDP.co) is a national model for using public records to empower citizens, used by more than one hundred thousand people annually. Agencies like COPA and Chicago’s Inspector General expanded their release of police data in response to our site, while our team supported transparency efforts in New York and other jurisdictions.
Somebody, our 2020 Pulitzer finalist podcast has over 1.7 million downloads, and spurred Chicago’s Inspector General to recommended that CPD change its policies governing how officers handle people who have been shot.
In 2015, Jamie Kalven published a piece titled “Sixteen Shots.” That reporting broke the story of the police killing of Laquan McDonald and set off a series of events that culminated in the release of dashcam footage of the murder, the resignation of police superintendent Garry McCarthy, and the conviction of CPD officer Jason Van Dyke. We also co-produced 16 Shots, a documentary for SHOWTIME that won the 2020 Emmy.
