Love Makes it Real: Celebrating Our Girl Tuesday, Dr. Margaret T. Burroughs

On October 26, 2025, the Invisible Institute, South Side Weekly, and the Hyde Park Art Center will host an afternoon of artmaking and reflections on Dr. Margaret T.G. Burroughs’ legacy at the Hyde Park Art Center. This event will focus on Dr. Burroughs’ commitment to art as both a social practice and a teaching tool. Starting at 1pm, participants will have the opportunity to screenprint t-shirts, tote bags, and posters, as well as take a poetry workshop from Ciara Miller. Additionally, at 3pm, there will also be a conversation between Jaquavis Swift - an Invisible Institute Burroughs’ Legacy Project scholar - and Sarah Ross - co-founder of the Prison + Neighborhood Arts/Education Project. Throughout the day, participants will also have the opportunity to visit the Dr. Burroughs’ Reading Room, which will feature texts from Dr. Burroughs, her students, and others impacted by her legacy.

On November 1, 2025, the Invisible Institute will host a birthday celebration in honor of Dr. Burroughs’s 110th birthday. The intent of this project is to host a public birthday celebration for Dr. Margaret Burroughs in order to: memorialize her teaching and activism, celebrate art-making, and center the importance of storytelling and oral history. The celebration activities will include T-shirt and poster printing, community conversation, resource sharing, and oral history collection. We eagerly anticipate that many BLP narrators and their families and friends will attend the event, vitally enriching a circle of conversation and remembrance.
Dr Margaret T.G. Burroughs Showcase

On November 2, 2025, the Invisible Institute, South Side Weekly, and the Logan Center for the Arts will host a performance showcase in honor of Dr. Margaret T.G. Burroughs in the Logan Center auditorium. The event will feature performances and readings by artists inspired by Dr. Burroughs, including several of her former students.
During the showcase, participants will have the opportunity to share oral histories reflecting on their direct and indirect experiences with Dr. Burroughs and her legacy. The evening will close with cake and drinks to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Burroughs.
Performers will include Mud Theatre, Anthony Spaulding, Carl Williams, Yoel Davis, Cedric X Cal. The event will be MCed by Burroughs team member Rasheed Harvey.
